As the evenings draw in and the days get colder it’s definitely starting to feel more like winter and that means we can finally get excited about Christmas. We’ve put together a list of things to do in and around Sutton Harbour during the festive season. There’s plenty to suit any family and any budget so come down and embrace the Christmas spirit.
The Waterfront Lights Switch On – November 26th from 16:00
Come and watch the magic of Christmas light up Plymouth waterfront on November 26th.
Santa and his Elf will be arriving via RNLI Lifeboat to join the Lord Mayor on The Parade and switch on the lights. To add to the festivities there will be live performances from local schools, community groups and theatre companies. Stick around after the lights switch on and enter a competition for Best Dressed Elf to win yourself some prizes.
ClayArt Christmas Workshop – Booking required
Try this two-part workshop and create unique festive decorations to make your Christmas extra special. The first session will let you create your masterpieces out of raw clay with an arrangement of tools and cutters provided by the team at ClayArt. They will then dry and dire your creation and in around three weeks it will be ready for decorating. With an extensive palette to choose from you can create any design you want before allowing it to dry, be glazed and have its final firing. Your personalised Christmas decorations will be ready for collection in around a week.
The price for the workshop is £50 per person and they will provide you with enough clay to create five medium-sized decorations.
Snowflake Trail – November 26th – January 7th
The Snowflake Trail is back again this year in Plymouth, and families are invited to explore the waterfront to find the beautiful snowflakes. You can start the trail from mid-November by downloading a map from the Visit Plymouth website or by picking one up from the Tourist Information Centre. Follow the trail around Sutton Harbour and the Barbican and find the names of 10 snowflakes to be in with a chance of winning in the free prize draw.
Barbican Theatre & Le Navet Bete’s A Christmas Carol at the Plymouth Athenaeum –December 14th – January 7th
Co-produced with the Barbican Theatre, Le Navet Bete are back with a Christmas comedy spectacular. Watch their take on the classic Christmas ghost story, A Christmas Carol and follow an eventful night in the life of Ebenezer Scrooge as he is confronted by the three ghosts of Christmas. Packed full of physical comedy and featuring all of our favourite Dickensian characters, as well as a few Christmas extras, this festive show is set to be a hit. Get closer to the story by booking onto one of the Barbican Christmas Carol Tours hosted by the Barbican Theatre this festive season.

Enjoy a tour of Plymouth’s historic cobbled streets and follow Ebenezer Scrooge’s story of Christmas discovery. With actors in Victorian costumes leading the tours you will be immersed in the tale of A Christmas Carol. After the tour, take your time to explore the independent shops and cafes that Sutton Harbour and the Barbican have to offer.
