How to have an eggs-tra special Easter

3rd April 2019

The Easter bunny will soon be hopping down our streets bringing delicious chocolate treats but you can enjoy more than just chocolate eggs over the Easter holidays. There’s a basket-load of events happening in Plymouth throughout April to entertain the whole family, and many take place along the waterfront.

Sutton Harbour has some egg-cellent treats in store for visitors looking for some Easter fun. Cafes and restaurants along the harbour will no doubt offer up Easter themed menu options over the holidays and with the days now becoming longer, there’s even more time to spend along the historic harbour with family and friends.

Egg-citing tall ship visits

We’re kicking off April with a visit from the tall ship Tactona. The vessel was built in 1928 on the beach of Calcutta, India. It’s said that elephants helped with the build by dragging trees from the forest to the beach. The Tactona already has links to Plymouth as throughout the 1960s, the University of Plymouth used her to train students as part their navigation courses. The ship will be moored alongside Quay Road from Friday 5th until Sunday 14th April.

If one wasn’t enough, how would you like two tall ship visits in April? Arriving on Easter Sunday, The Grayhound will be in Sutton Harbour for a five day visit, leaving on Friday 26th April. The historic ship has visited Plymouth many times in the past and has been involved in previous Pirate Weekend celebrations. There will be opportunities for visitors to climb aboard and explore the deck.

Cracking events at NMA

The National Marine Aquarium is hosting one of its Sleeping with Sharks events this Easter half-term. On Saturday 13th April you can see what happens after hours with an evening of activities, games and a midnight snack before sleeping next to the scariest fish in the sea.

Throughout the Easter holidays the NMA based at the entrance to Sutton Harbour is hosting Dive into Easter events where you can experience the underwater world of Scuba Diving. There will be themed activities, a new interactive Dive Show, VR diving experience and an egg-citing Scuba Dive Trail around the aquarium.

Visit the NMA website for more information and to purchase tickets.

Treats for the adults

It’s not just the kids that get to have all the fun this Easter. For those over the age of 18, HonkyTonk Wine Library in Sutton Harbour is hosting a Gin Tasting Evening on Wednesday 10th April from 7pm. With guest speakers from Barbican Botanics, the evening is set to be full of fun and more importantly, gin! There will be six gins to try followed by HonkyTonk’s Lamb Rogan Josh (or vegetarian alternative) with a double G&T.

Visit the HonkyTonk website for tickets.

Sail away for Easter

On Easter weekend Plymouth Boat Trips will take you back in time with their Ultimate 80s Party Cruise. The adults only event will get you into the groove with the best hits of the 80s and complimentary cocktail on arrival. From 7.30pm on Saturday 20th April, you can cruise along Plymouth Sound and dance the night away with a resident DJ and fully licenced bar.

Visit the Plymouth Boat Trips Facebook page to purchase tickets.

Hunting around Plymouth

If you decide to venture out of Sutton Harbour for some more Easter fun, then there are plenty of events happening all around the city.

From Monday 8th to Friday 12th April, the whole family can explore the city centre hunting for 16 well-known children’s characters. Follow the map to selected businesses and find each character hiding in their windows – you might even find some chocolate eggs along the way.

The Creation Station will be delivering three drop in Easter workshops for children aged 2-11 years old, in partnership with Plymouth City Centre Company. Across the 9th, 12th and 17th April children can enjoy creating Easter eggs and characters with Play Doh, making Easter Crowns and decorating Easter eggs and masks.

On Thursday 18th April Plymouth Hoe will be lined with a huge variety of motorbikes for this popular event, which starts at 6pm. If you’re a lover of bikes then this is the perfect event for you, but don’t worry if you can’t make it to this one, there are multiple dates for Plymouth Hoe Bike Nights throughout the year.
