The Barbican Theatre is a tiny venue bursting with enormously exciting new productions and engaging workshops as well as a dynamic charity engaging in innovative projects with young people to help develop their creative skills.
Find it above West Pier on the Barbican alongside Sutton Harbour; this tucked-away treat is nestled at the top of a flight of steps adjacent to the Mayflower Visitor Centre just opposite the Mayflower Steps, or alternatively take the sloping roadway leading up behind Island House.
Formed in 1980, the Barbican Theatre aims to raise the standard of dance and theatre performance produced by, with and for young people, challenging traditional notions of theatre and dance and liberating imaginations.
The main theatre stages an enticing mix of challenging and entertaining productions while the newer B-Bar is a lively venue incorporating a coffee shop, bar, noodle restaurant and ideal, intimate venue for hilarious stand-up comedy shows, live music evenings, poetry recitals and many other smaller events.
The Barbican Theatre takes its work outside too, with performances in outdoor and unusual spaces, and the theatre company runs workshops in schools and community buildings, with dance, drama and theatre classes for ages 5 to 12 on offer each term.
