Whether you’re in a long-term relationship or starting something new, Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to celebrate with the special someone in your life, whether it’s over a candle-lit dinner or on a less traditional but adventurous fun day out. And if you’re single, there are still plenty of options to keep you entertained this February 14th if you head down to Sutton Harbour.
The origin of Valentine’s Day is not 100% clear, with various tales of men called Valentine which each have the potential to contribute to the tradition we mark today. Some speculate that there was once a Christian priest from accident Rome called Valentine, who would wed young couples in secret after the Emperor outlawed marriage for young people because he believed single men made for better soldiers. The priest was put to death when his ceremonies were discovered.
Another legend tells of a Valentine who was imprisoned and fell in love with a women who’d visit him, thought to be the jailor’s daughter. He wrote her letters and signed them “from your Valentine”. It is believed that both of these men were executed on February 14th.
Pope Gelasius declared February 14th as St Valentine’s Day in 496 and by the 18th century, the exchanging of cards and gift-giving became common in England.
Whether you believe these stories to be fact or fiction, it’s still fun to celebrate Valentine’s Day – however you choose to do it.
