9-10th August 2017
Every summer, Plymouth hosts the British Fireworks Championships – the most popular event in the calendar for Britain’s Ocean City, and often described as the most spectacular fireworks display in the country.
Over two August evenings, six companies seeking the coveted title of British Firework Champions set off elaborate displays after dusk falls, usually starting at 9.30pm.
In 2015, more than four tonnes of fireworks were set off as the country’s top pyrotechnics companies battled it out for the top honour.
The perfectly calm setting of Plymouth Sound is a breath-taking backdrop, as well as a natural amphitheatre, and Plymouth Hoe – just minutes on foot from the historic waterfront quarter of Sutton Harbour – is a popular viewing platform for thousands of people keen to see the sights and sounds of this tremendous competition.
But the fireworks are also visible from Sutton Harbour itself, where you can enjoy a calmer atmosphere on the quayside, or even watch the displays from the comfort of an outdoor seating area alongside a restaurant, bar or café.
Boat owners berthed in Sutton Harbour’s Marina regularly watch the fireworks from their top deck – or even choose to sail out into the Sound and moor up between Drake’s Island and Plymouth Hoe for the very best front row seats of all.
Entertainment on Plymouth Hoe includes live music and fairground rides from 6pm, and Sutton Harbour is full of family-friendly restaurants, cafes and bars providing plenty of choice for something to eat or drink before you settle down to watch the show.
This year, the British Fireworks Championships will be held in Plymouth on August 16th and 17th. Find out more by visiting the British Firework Championships website.
